Duel at Dawn — Wild reels appear only when they contribute
The key condition is easy to miss: a VS symbol expands into a Wild reel only when that expansion participates in a win.
Supplier sources below. Operator eligibility needs a separate check.

Duel at Dawn by Hacksaw Gaming combines conditional full-reel Wilds with Outlaw shots and two Free Spins routes. The official page separates those systems, so the review should too.
DuelReels and VS symbols
A VS symbol can expand to make its entire reel Wild, but only if the expanded reel contributes to a win. The Outlaw and Sheriff then carry multipliers from 2× to 200×; the survivor’s multiplier applies to wins that include that reel. When multiple DuelReels participate in one win, their multipliers are added. The provider says no more than one VS can land on a reel.
Outlaw shots
An Outlaw expands into a full Wild reel and fires a revolver holding one to six bullets. The shots turn random positions Wild. Up to two Outlaws can appear in a spin, no more than one per reel, and they cannot shoot the same position or each other. Outlaw multipliers also range from 2× to 200× and add together when multiple Outlaws take part in the same win.
The provider states that VS and Outlaw symbols never land at the same time.
Wild Wild West and Dusk ’til Dawn
Three Free Spins scatters start Wild Wild West with ten spins and enhanced feature likelihood. Two extra scatters add two spins and three add four.
Four scatters start Dusk ’til Dawn with ten Free Spins. Six-bullet Outlaws can unlock up to four separate DuelSpins: the first guarantees at least two VS symbols, the second at least three, the third at least four and the fourth five. Those are counts, not fixed reel numbers. Each unlock also adds three Free Spins, while its DuelSpin does not consume the Free Spins counter. No more than two unlock in one spin; VS appears in this mode only during DuelSpins.
Evidence limits
The public source does not publish readable RTP, stakes or New Zealand casino availability. Multiplier ranges are feature rules, not promises of a result.
Conditional expansion is the central rule
A landed VS symbol is not enough to prove a DuelReel. The provider states that the symbol expands to make its reel Wild only when that full-reel expansion contributes to a win. The audit must therefore evaluate the potential expanded board before applying the feature.
Save the stopped grid with the VS coordinate, then create the full-Wild version of that reel under the deployed paytable. Trace every valid winning route. If none uses the expanded reel, the public rule does not support treating it as an active DuelReel.
This condition prevents a non-participating VS from being counted merely because it is visible. The settlement and winning-route display are the decisive evidence.
One VS per reel
The provider says no more than one VS symbol can land on a reel. Record each VS by reel and row. Several VS symbols may appear on different reels, but duplicate counts on one reel need careful review of animation and final state.
When multiple potential DuelReels exist, test each expanded reel against the winning combinations. A reel that participates receives its documented duel and multiplier treatment; a reel outside every win should not contribute.
The one-per-reel restriction describes landing positions, not the number of Wild cells after expansion. A qualifying VS converts the entire reel state.
Outlaw and Sheriff duel multipliers
After a qualifying DuelReel expansion, the Outlaw and Sheriff carry multipliers from 2× to 200×. The survivor’s multiplier applies to wins that include that reel. Record both displayed values, the survivor and every winning combination using the expanded reel.
Do not apply the multiplier to unrelated wins elsewhere on the grid. Participation is required twice: first for expansion, then for multiplier application to the relevant award.
The 2×–200× range is an allowed feature range, not a promise of a high value. Use the amount displayed in the tested round.
Adding multiple DuelReel multipliers
If several DuelReels participate in one win, their surviving multipliers are added. For example, participating 5× and 8× reels yield a combined 13× feature multiplier, not 40×.
List the contributing reels and values before calculating the sum. A DuelReel visible on the board but absent from the winning route is excluded.
Keep the base win, additive multiplier total and credited result in separate fields. This makes an erroneous multiplication easy to spot.
Outlaw symbol expansion
An Outlaw expands into a full Wild reel and carries a revolver with one to six bullets. Record its reel, displayed multiplier, original bullet count and final Wild-reel state.
Up to two Outlaws can appear in one spin, with no more than one per reel. Give them stable identifiers O1 and O2 so their shots and multipliers remain separate.
The public description states that VS and Outlaw symbols never land at the same time. If both appear in a purported stopped result, verify title, version and whether one image belongs to an animation or bonus transition.
Auditing bullet targets
Record each bullet in firing order, its Outlaw source and destination coordinate. Shots turn random positions Wild. The same position cannot be shot twice, and the two Outlaws cannot shoot each other.
Before every shot, preserve the target’s prior symbol. After impact, confirm the Wild state. This provides direct evidence that every bullet produced a distinct eligible destination.
If a shot appears to revisit a coordinate, check whether the first highlight was only an aiming animation. Use the final event record and settled grid.
Emptied revolver and one-to-six range
The revolver count determines how many positions the Outlaw attempts to convert. One to six is the published range; use the value printed on the symbol in the actual round.
Do not assume two Outlaws carry equal bullet counts. Track each countdown independently. The final number of shot-created Wilds should reconcile with eligible distinct targets and the event log.
The bullet count has no direct cash value. Converted cells matter only through valid winning routes under the paytable.
Adding Outlaw multipliers
Outlaw multipliers also range from 2× to 200× and add when multiple Outlaws participate in the same win. Record participation after the shots have produced the final grid.
An Outlaw can fire several bullets yet fail to take part in a particular combination. Its multiplier should not be included in that award merely because its shots changed the board.
When both Outlaws contribute, add their values once each. Do not add a multiplier again for every bullet-created Wild.
VS and Outlaw states must remain separate
The mutual-exclusion rule simplifies a round ledger: a stopped spin belongs to the VS/DuelReel path or the Outlaw-shot path, not both. Add a feature family field before evaluating multipliers.
This also prevents a bullet-created Wild from being described as a DuelReel cell. The source, activation condition and multiplier application differ.
If another mode guarantees VS symbols after Outlaw activity, such as unlocked DuelSpins, record the activities as consecutive feature states rather than simultaneous landings.
Wild Wild West entry and counter
Three Free Spins scatters trigger Wild Wild West with ten spins. Save the three-scatter grid, initial counter and version. The provider says feature likelihood is enhanced, but the public text does not quantify the increase.
Two additional scatters add two spins and three add four. Record scatter coordinates and the counter before and after each extension. Do not infer an award for one scatter.
Use the same VS and Outlaw audit rules on every bonus grid, while keeping the Free Spins counter separate from nested feature animations.
Dusk ’til Dawn entry
Four scatters trigger Dusk ’til Dawn with ten spins. In this mode, VS symbols appear only during DuelSpins. Ordinary feature spins should therefore be labelled separately from unlocked DuelSpins.
Save the four-scatter trigger and initial state. Track every Outlaw, bullet count and six-bullet event because those events drive DuelSpin progression.
The provider explicitly lists two- and three-Scatter extensions under Wild Wild West, not under Dusk ’til Dawn. Do not automatically transfer that table into this mode. Keep the three-Free-Spin additions from DuelSpin unlocks separately documented and qualify any further extension using the deployed help.
Unlocking DuelSpins
An Outlaw firing all six bullets can unlock a DuelSpin. The four levels guarantee VS counts of at least two, at least three, at least four and finally five, not specified reel identities. Record the unlock level, actual landed coordinates and its separate three-Free-Spin addition.
Each unlocked DuelSpin adds three spins. No more than two can be unlocked in a single spin, so a single result should not add more than six spins through this mechanism under the published rule.
Keep the unlock order visible. The first level guarantees at least two VS symbols, not four fixed reels; an actual landing can exceed its stated minimum. Do not confuse a higher observed symbol count with proof that later levels have already been unlocked.
DuelSpin ledger
For each DuelSpin, record its minimum VS count, actual coordinates, contributing expansions, surviving multipliers and credits. A guaranteed VS still needs the participation condition for expansion and multiplier use. A symbol-count guarantee does not guarantee a winning DuelReel or monetary award.
Carry the unlocked progression level into the correct Dusk ’til Dawn record, not an invented persistent set of guaranteed reel identities. At bonus end, close that progression ledger without carrying its unlocks into unrelated rounds.
One unlock awards one immediate separate DuelSpin and three additional ordinary Free Spins, not three DuelSpins. When two unlock together, resolve their DuelSpins sequentially before the next ordinary Free Spin; neither consumes the ordinary counter. Keep their credits and scheduled spin additions in separate ledgers.
Worked VS example
Suppose VS symbols land on reels two and four. Expanding reel two creates a winning route, while expanding reel four does not. Only reel two becomes a contributing DuelReel under the published condition.
The duel on reel two produces a displayed survivor multiplier, which applies to the win using that reel. Reel four contributes neither expansion nor multiplier to that award.
This example explains conditional participation without inventing stake, payout or probability.
Worked Outlaw example
Two Outlaws land on different reels with three and five bullets. The ledger records eight distinct eligible target positions, neither Outlaw is shot, and the final grid is settled.
If both expanded Outlaw reels participate in one win with displayed multipliers 4× and 7×, the combined feature multiplier is 11×. It is not 28× and is not multiplied again by eight bullets.
Actual values must come from the tested round; the example only demonstrates accounting.
Paytable and settlement requirements
Obtain the evaluation pattern, symbol values, Wild substitutions and multiplier application order from the deployed help. For every award, list the base combination, participating feature reels and additive multiplier sum.
Shot-created Wild positions can support several winning routes. Count each route according to the paytable without duplicating the same multiplier outside its participation rule.
Reconcile all subtotals with the round history and balance credit. Preserve the server round identifier.
RTP, stakes and cap
The accessible Hacksaw page does not expose readable RTP, stake interval, default denomination, volatility metric or maximum exposure. Collect these from the exact live information panel with operator, currency, version and date.
If multiple RTP versions exist, publish only the tested one. Do not combine multiplier ranges from the feature page with stakes from another deployment and call the result a verified configuration.
A 200× feature multiplier is not necessarily the game’s maximum payout. The complete paytable and cap are required.
New Zealand availability
The provider’s global page does not prove access for real-money play in New Zealand. Verify operator country terms, registration eligibility, authenticated catalogue and successful launch.
NZD support, payments, verification and withdrawals are operator facts. Source them separately and date the check.
A demo or portfolio listing is insufficient evidence. Do not recommend bypassing location controls.
Mobile and accessibility checks
On mobile, all expanded reels, bullet destinations, multiplier labels and counters must remain visible. Test portrait and landscape orientation and ensure outer reels are not cropped.
Reduced-motion mode should preserve the final duel survivor, shot order and converted cells. VS and Outlaw states need labels beyond colour. Keyboard focus should reach help, paytable and history.
After interruption, compare feature family, bullets remaining, unlocked DuelSpins, Free Spins counter, balance and round identifier with server history.
Support-ready record
For a VS dispute, include the original grid, hypothetical expanded reel, winning route, survivor multiplier and settlement. For an Outlaw dispute, include launcher IDs, bullet counts, ordered targets and final grid.
For Dusk ’til Dawn, attach six-bullet events, unlock level, three-spin additions and guaranteed VS reels. Identify the exact state transition that failed.
Never provide passwords, one-time codes, private keys or seed phrases. Ask authenticated support to inspect server events.
Session controls
Near-duel animations and six-bullet Outlaws can create a sense that an unlock is due. The published rules do not support that conclusion. Previous misses do not change the next result.
Set stake, spending and time limits before play. Do not increase the stake to chase a DuelSpin or 200× multiplier.
Mechanical understanding helps verify settlement, not predict outcomes. Use responsible-play controls and stop at the chosen boundary.

Worked Dusk queue: two unlocks, not six DuelSpins
Suppose a hypothetical Dusk ’til Dawn record has seven ordinary Free Spins remaining before its next spin, no queued DuelSpins and no levels unlocked yet. That ordinary spin consumes one, leaving six. Assume it lands two eligible Outlaws, each firing all six bullets, and the history confirms two valid unlocks. The no-shared-target rule still governs the twelve shot destinations; twelve bullets are not twelve unlocks.
Each accepted unlock adds three ordinary Free Spins. The counter becomes 7 − 1 + 3 + 3 = 12, while the separate immediate queue contains two DuelSpins. The first queued spin has the first-level guarantee of at least two VS symbols; the second has at least three. Resolve the first, then the second, before resuming the twelve ordinary Free Spins. Both queued transitions leave that ordinary counter at twelve.
| Illustrative event | Ordinary Free Spins left | Separate DuelSpins pending | Progression |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before ordinary spin | 7 | 0 | No unlocks assumed |
| After consuming that spin | 6 | 0 | Shot events recorded |
| After two confirmed unlocks | 12 | 2 | Levels one and two unlocked |
| After first queued DuelSpin | 12 | 1 | Minimum two VS for that event |
| After second queued DuelSpin | 12 | 0 | Minimum three VS for that event |
These are conditional counter examples, not a played session or an estimated likelihood of two six-bullet Outlaws. No Scatter retrigger has been assumed. Counting each DuelSpin as an ordinary consumed spin would incorrectly leave ten; interpreting each three-spin addition as three queued DuelSpins would incorrectly create six in the side queue.
Actual VS coordinates need their own row. A minimum-two event might hypothetically place its two symbols on reels one and four, while a different minimum-three event uses reels two, three and five. These are examples of identity versus count, not published preferred reel distributions. The one-VS-per-reel rule and conditional expansion remain mandatory. Do not carry those illustrative coordinates forward as guaranteed locations.
If all four levels were eventually unlocked in a separately documented ten-spin starting bonus, their additions would contribute twelve ordinary Free Spins: ten plus twelve equals twenty-two scheduled ordinary spins, absent other supported changes. Four separate DuelSpins would additionally occur without spending that counter. Twenty-two is therefore not the number of all reel evaluations, nor a promised result for every bonus. Later unlocks are conditional events, not progress owed after the first two.
Participation changes each award independently
Consider a different hypothetical DuelReel settlement with eligible survivor values 5× and 8×. If a recorded route includes both reels and its verified pre-feature award is 0.5B, the additive multiplier is 13× and that route’s result is 6.5B. A second route including only the 5× reel uses 5×, not 13×; if its independently verified base award were 1B, its result would be 5B.
The combined illustrative credit is 11.5B, counted once for those two distinct awards. At B = €0.20 it would be €2.30, before considering any originating debit. This is conditional arithmetic, not a published symbol table, a payout prediction or proof of euro availability. Shot targets and VS counts cannot supply the missing base-award coefficients.
The same distinction protects an Outlaw audit: a shot-created Wild can help a combination without that combination including the Outlaw’s own reel. The supplier assigns the multiplier by reel participation, not by tracing who fired a helpful bullet. Preserve the actual final winning route before attributing its multiplier.
An individual value and its additive total are different limits
The primary list permits individual values 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 15, 20, 25, 50, 75, 100 and 200. “From 2× to 200×” does not mean every integer in that interval can appear on one reel: 11×, 13× and 150× are not in this published individual-value set. A displayed value outside it requires compatible version evidence rather than a guess based on the range.
An additive award can nevertheless have a total absent from that set. Two participating reels with 4× and 7× give 11×; with 5× and 8× they give 13×; with 100× and 200× they give 300×. The resulting sum is an award calculation, not a newly generated individual reel value. Calling 300× invalid merely because one reel stops at 200× would confuse those units.
For instance, a hypothetical accepted win using two 200× reels has an additive factor of 400×. If its independently confirmed pre-feature amount were 0.5B, the adjusted amount would be 200B. That is not a published maximum payout or probability claim: other awards, caps and settlement order remain governed by the active paytable. Likewise, two visible 200× reels do not produce that factor for a route including only one.
This distinction also explains why a large symbol count during a DuelSpin is insufficient evidence of a large payment. First establish which VS symbols actually expand; then identify the winning route, its participating reels, their eligible survivor values and its own base award. A guaranteed landing count supplies only the first part of that calculation, not all its remaining inputs.
Bottom line: evaluate the winning line first, then apply only the DuelReel or Outlaw multipliers that actually participate.
How to verify the version you can actually open
A provider page proves that a title exists and describes the supplier's intended rules. It does not prove that a casino accepts players in New Zealand, that the title is enabled for a particular account, or that the highest published RTP is the version in the lobby. Treat availability, operator eligibility and product configuration as three separate checks.
Start with identity, then configuration
Open the game only through the authenticated casino lobby. The information or help panel should identify Hacksaw Gaming, the exact title and the active mathematical return. Compare the reel or grid layout, paylines or cluster rules, named features and symbol behaviour with the official product material. Similar artwork or a matching title is not enough when the help file is missing or inconsistent.
When the supplier publishes several RTP values, report all of them as configurations. Do not assume the highest option is deployed. RTP is a theoretical long-run measure across a very large number of rounds; it is not a refund rate for one player and cannot predict the next result. Volatility is different: it describes how unevenly results are distributed on the provider's scale.
Read stake controls as money, not interface decoration
Provider sheets often quote a reference range in euros. That range does not establish New Zealand-dollar support or the limits in a specific account. Before a paid round, identify the total amount that will leave the balance. If the interface separates denomination, coins and lines, verify the combined total. If Extra Bet is active, calculate its full cost before pressing spin.
Feature-buy prices are multiples of the current bet, not promised returns. A 100x purchase at a $1 stake costs $100; at a $2 stake it costs $200. Availability can vary by market and some mathematical configurations may not support the control. If the live help does not explain the price, delivered feature and active RTP, leave the option unused.
Keep simulation figures in their proper scope
A game sheet may publish a maximum result observed in a large simulation. That is not automatically the contractual maximum payout and never describes a likely session. Preserve the provider's wording, sample size and configuration. Check the live rules for a binding cap and the operator terms for any separate payout limit. Do not turn an extreme result into a promotional headline.
Audit a disputed round
If an animation freezes or a connection drops, do not repeat the wager immediately. Reopen the game through the authenticated lobby and inspect round history. Record the time, total stake, balance movement and round identifier. The result can be settled by the gaming system even when the device never displays the final animation. Send evidence through verified operator support; never disclose a password, recovery phrase or one-time code.
Read the paytable as a calculation document
The paytable should explain what creates a win, which symbols substitute, where special symbols can land and how multiple awards combine. For line games, confirm direction and active paylines. For cluster games, confirm adjacency, minimum group size and the order of collection. For respins, identify what remains locked, what resets the counter and what ends the feature. A graphic effect can illustrate those rules but cannot replace them.
Separate addition from multiplication. Several prize values may be added before a multiplier applies, while reel-specific multipliers can sometimes multiply together only when each reel participates in the same win. Reconstruct one low-stake result from game history. If the arithmetic cannot be matched to the help file, stop and ask the operator rather than guessing.
Do not confuse hit frequency with a profitable round
Provider sheets can publish hit frequency or category probabilities. A hit simply means a round returned a qualifying amount; it can be smaller than the stake. “Big”, “Mega” or “Epic” thresholds are provider reporting categories, not promises. They are useful for comparing mathematical versions only when definitions and samples are the same.
Random outcomes do not become due after a long gap. A feature that appeared repeatedly in a demo or marketing clip has no obligation to repeat in a funded session. Previous rounds do not create a debt from the next random result.
Confirm market and device behaviour independently
A title can exist in the supplier catalogue while an operator disables it for a territory, currency, device or bonus. Language localisation is not evidence of legal availability. Confirm the operator's identity, accepted countries and current lobby separately from the provider review.
On mobile, verify that balance, total bet, feature state and help remain visible without overlap. On desktop, check that browser zoom does not hide a purchase control or change the apparent denomination. Mathematical configuration should not change merely because the screen changes; if the help shows another RTP, treat it as a different deployment and record it.
Keep a compact evidence record
For any fact used in a review, save the title, provider, official URL, document date when available, access date and exact territorial scope. For a live session, add the operator domain, Game ID, RTP, currency and a non-sensitive screenshot of the help panel. This makes later corrections possible when a supplier updates a sheet or an operator changes configuration.
Missing information should remain missing. Do not estimate an RTP from results, convert a euro reference range into an operator's NZD limit, or treat another casino's configuration as evidence. A transparent “not confirmed” is more useful than a precise-looking number without the correct source.
Use limits that survive the feature design
Collection meters, expanding grids, sticky symbols and near misses can make a session feel unfinished. Unless the rules explicitly preserve progress, the visible state has no value after the round or feature ends. Set a money limit and time limit before launch, count feature buys immediately, and stop at the limit even when a meter appears close to an upgrade.
No random game is an income plan. Do not borrow, use essential funds or raise the stake to recover a loss. If play stops feeling recreational, use timeout, deposit-limit or self-exclusion tools and consult the site's responsible gambling guide.
Primary source and correction path
This guide separates documented product information from market availability. Check the official source and the game help inside the exact version offered before making a decision.
